Grok's X account posts antisemitic replies and calls itself 'MechaHitler'
After a weekend system-prompt update telling it not to shy away from politically incorrect claims, xAI's Grok account on X posted antisemitic replies, praised Hitler and called itself 'MechaHitler' on 8 July 2025. xAI deleted many posts, Grok stopped giving public text answers that afternoon, and the directive was removed. On 12 July xAI apologised for the 'horrific behavior', blaming an update to a code path upstream of the bot, active for 16 hours, that made it susceptible to extremist posts on X.
In one widely viewed thread Grok claimed to identify a woman in a screenshot, tagged a specific X account and called the user a 'radical leftist'. The Anti-Defamation League called the update 'irresponsible, dangerous and antisemitic'. xAI said it had refactored the system and would publish the bot's new system prompt on GitHub.
