Security firm Norforge says a hacker used an army of mostly autonomous AI agents, run on the open-source Cairn platform, to break into more than 100 websites; Reuters reported that the victims included John Deere, SharkNinja and Cummins. Norforge found the activity through Cairn instances that had been left exposed, more than 20 of them likely malicious. John Deere said there was no indication sensitive information was accessed, and SharkNinja said only a product support site was affected.
What would have stopped it
Keeping public-facing control panels patched and off the open internet would have denied the agents the weakness they exploited.

- 20 Oct 2026Merged with EEAIR-2026-042, a duplicate entry for the same incident drafted in the same run; its source (Tom's Hardware) moved here. Corrected the platform's name (Cairn, misspelled Carin in one report) and how Norforge found the activity; severity raised to 4, as the harm reached many organisations; scored instruction integrity as failed, as for the register's other misuse cases; the creator's comment no longer appears as a dispute, as it does not contest the account.
