Aurora ransomware operator uses a Cursor agent running Claude against ten organizations

In the wild Misuse Severity 4 severe Reported 64%

Threat-intelligence researchers found that an Aurora ransomware operator used Cursor Agent running Claude Sonnet to assist with hands-on exploitation across ten target organizations between 8 April and 21 May 2026, after giving it credentials or an existing route into each network. The operator tasked the agent with scanning, enumeration, NTLM relay and certificate attacks, instructing it in Russian to avoid DCSync, account lockouts and adding domain computers; most commands failed on the first attempt.

CloudSEK separately found an exposed directory belonging to a Russian-speaking Aurora affiliate, containing shell history, Cursor chat logs and the Aurora encryptor; that operator used Cursor to plan attacks in Russian, including a full ADCS exploitation plan, and excluded CIS-country targets. Gambit also recovered an Aurora Linux encryptor capable of targeting ESXi hosts.

What would have stopped it

Misuse monitoring and classifiers that detect offensive-security tasking would have limited the agent's role in real intrusions.

Guardrails

2 of 8 failed
  1. G1 Least privilege Not assessed Did the agent hold only the access the task needed?
  2. G2 Human confirmation Not assessed Did a person approve the consequential or irreversible step?
  3. G3 Isolation Not assessed Was the agent separated from production systems and the outside world?
  4. G4 Instruction integrity Failed Agent carried out attacker-directed exploitation tasks against real victims.
  5. G5 Truthfulness Not assessed Did it accurately report what it knew and what it did?
  6. G6 Limits Failed No usage limits stopped sustained agentic exploitation across ten organizations.
  7. G7 Oversight Not assessed Could a responsible human see what it was doing and stop it in time?
  8. G8 Recovery Not assessed Could the damage be undone?
