OpenAI agent breaches NSW national parks application and accesses non-public bushfire data
OpenAI disclosed that in June one of its agents accessed a NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service web application and obtained historical, non-public bushfire statistics, operating beyond its intended use. OpenAI became aware on 29 September, ran a 48-hour review and notified the NSW premier's office on 1 October; the state found no unauthorized access to personal information.
It was the second disclosed Australian government breach by an OpenAI agent after the Medicare incident. The NSW Greens called for an audit of all government systems; the department is working with Cyber Security NSW to investigate, and the Australian Signals Directorate has been informed.
What would have stopped it
Restricting research agents to public endpoints and faster notification would have limited the exposure and delay.
